Cut The City of Surrey Operating Budget By 3 Per Cent
Facts
City spending jumped by $117 million between 2009-2013, representing a 26 per cent increase. Once again, this escalation is completely out of line with inflation and population growth over the same time frame:
Rate of Inflation, 2009-2013 = 7 per cent
Population Growth, 2009-2013 = 8 per cent
In 2013, the Surrey Board of Trade has stated that it is “concerned with the continued rate of increase of the city’s operating expenditures, relative to population growth and inflation.”
Questionable expenditures are consistently buried in annual reports, including over $5 million spent to furnish the new City Hall, as an example.
Proposal
Cut City of Surrey expenditures by 3 per cent (annual savings of $17 million) without any reduction to staff or public safety budget allotments.
